Professor Paweł Dunaj has been awarded a grant of nearly one million zlotys from the National Science Centre 12.06.2026 10:08

Paweł Dunaj, PhD., Eng., an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics ZUT, will conduct this research in collaboration with the team led by Prof. Andreas Archenti from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH).

Prof. Dunaj’s project titled From Contact Mechanics to Diagnostic Response: Detectability of Defects in Preloaded Angular Contact Ball Bearings, was among nearly 250 proposals selected for funding in this call of the National Science Centre’s SONATA 21 program. The total value of all research projects in this call exceeds PLN 340 million.

What will the research of Professor Dunaj focus on?

Modern manufacturing is increasingly moving toward autonomous production systems, i.e., factories capable of operating with minimal human involvement. For such systems to operate reliably and safely, they must not only carry out the manufacturing process but also independently monitor the condition of key components and detect symptoms of wear early enough. From this perspective, spindle bearings are among the most important components, as their condition directly affects the efficiency of the production process. The project will investigate contact phenomena in angular contact ball bearings and examine how local defects are reflected in measurable signals, such as changes in stiffness, vibration, acoustic emission and temperature. The knowledge gained may help to develop the diagnostic methods and predictive maintenance strategies, enabling all service actions to be taken before a failure occurs.

The project will be carried out by the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, within the team led by Paweł Dunaj, in cooperation with the team of Prof. Andreas Archenti from Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH).
